I will be presenting “Joseph Smith, Polygamy, and the Problem of the Levirate Widow” at the American Academy of Religion meetings in San Francisco this November. The talk pursues arguments from Chapter 8 of the book, specifically examining ways that the problem of remarriage after bereavement figured into the conceptual infrastructure of early Mormon polygamy.
   
Samuel Brown—ICU physician, medical researcher, and cultural historian—is Assistant Professor of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Division Associate in Medical Ethics and Humanities at Intermountain Medical Center/University of Utah. Trained at Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Brown researches and writes at the interfaces among medicine, religion, culture, and history.
